In cleaning RV awnings, keep in mind that there are two types of awing materials. Acrylic awnings breathe well and dry quickly, which limits mildew issues. They are more like a fabric and are coated to help repeal water. The other awning material type is vinyl, which have excellent mildew resistance properties. Neither material is immune to mildew, though! Mildew and mold can grow if you roll up either material while still wet or dirty.
There are commercial products to remove mildew and mold from awnings, but there’s a much cheaper and environmentally friendly DIY approach that also works very well. White vinegar will kill mildew and around 80% of mold species.
Combine ¼ cup of mild dish soap, ½ cup to 1 cup of white vinegar, and 1 gallon of water into a garden sprayer. Spray down your entire topside and underside of the awning with the vinegar solution. Allow the solution to sit for 5-10 minutes.
Use a soft bristled brush to scrub the awning with a bucket of soapy water. Remember not to over scrub on an acrylic awing because they have a coating that helps repeal water.
If you find mildew remnants, you can repeat the process and let the vinegar sit on the awning for longer. Rinse the awning with clean water and let it dry before rolling up.
